The Imperative Form
La Forma Imperativa
The Imperative is a mode that presents only 3 persons: the second singular and plural (“TU” and “VOI”) and the first plural (“NOI”).
Per andare al Duomo prendete la bicicletta, non la macchina! To go to the Duomo take your bikes, not the car!
Telefonate a Marco, è il suo compleanno! Call Marco, it's his birthday!
Togli le scarpe quando entri a casa! Take off your shoes when you enter the house!

For – ERE and -IRE verbs, “TU”, “NOI” and “VOI”, the Imperative conjugation is the same as it is for the Indicative Present form:
- METTERE (“to put“)
(TU) Metti a posto la tua stanza! (You singular) Tidy your room!
(NOI) Mettiamo a posto la nostra stanza! (We) Let’s tidy our room!
(VOI) Mettete a posto la vostra stanza! (You plural) Tidy your room!
- FINIRE (“to finish“)
(TU) Finisci di studiare! (You singular) Finish studying!
(NOI) Finiamo di studiare! (We) Let’s finish studying!
(VOI) Finite di studiare! (You plural) Finish studying!
- CHIUDERE (“to close“)
(TU) Chiudi la porta! (You singular) Close the door!
(NOI) Chiudiamo la porta! (We) Let’s close the door!
(VOI) Chiudete la porta! (You plural) Shut the door!
For -ARE verbs, the Imperative is the same as the Present tense of “NOI” and “VOI”, but changes for “TU”, which adding the ending “-a” in the Imperative, instead of the “- i” found in Present tense conjugations:

(NOI) Telefoniamo a Paola! (We)Let’s phone Paola!

Sta’ fermo, o romperai la sedia! Stay still or you’ll break the chair!
Abbi pazienza, arrivo subito! Be patient, I’ll be there soon!
Sappi che questa è l’ultima volta che te lo dico! Know that this is the last time I tell you!
Basta litigare ragazzi, fate la pace! That’s enough fighting, make peace!
The Negative Imperative
L’Imperativo Negativo
To form the Negative Imperative for “NOI” and “VOI”, we just need to put the negation in front of the conjugated verb:
Per andare al Duomo non prendiamo la bicicletta, ma la macchina! To go to the Duomo let’s not take the bikes, but the car!
Non telefoniamo a Marco, è arrabbiato! Let’s not call Marco, he’s angry!
Non togliete le scarpe tutte le volte che entrate a casa! Don’t take off your shoes every time you come into the house!
Meanwhile, the negative form of the second person singular “TU” is formed by using the verb in its Infinitive form:
Non parlare così ad alta voce, Luca dorme! Don’t talk so loudly. Luca’s sleeping!
Non chiudere la finestra, ho caldo! Don’t close the window, I’m hot!
Non pulire la cucina, lo faccio io! Don’t clean the kitchen, I’ll do it!

When the pronoun is used with the Imperative, you just need to attach it to the ending of the conjugated verb:
Il pesce: mangialo tu! The fish: You eat it!
La lettera: scriviamola noi! The letter: Let’s write it!
I regali: compriamoli noi! The presents: Let’s buy them!
Le canzoni: sentitele voi! The songs: Listen to them!

For the negative form of the “NOI” and “VOI” Imperative with pronouns, we just need to put the negation “NON” in front of the conjugated verb, while the pronouns behave as above:

(VOI) La lettera: non scrivetela! The letter: don’t write it!
(NOI) Gli spaghetti: non mangiamoli! The spaghetti: let’s not eat it!
(NOI) Le canzoni: non sentiamole! The songs: let’s not listen to them!
The “TU” form is slightly different, taking the Infinitive of each verb and removing the final -E, adding the pronoun, and placing the negation “NON” in front:
(TU) Il pesce: non mangiarlo! The fish: don’t eat it!
(TU) La lettera: non scriverla! The letter: don’t write it!
(TU) Gli spaghetti: non mangiarli! The spaghetti: don’t eat it!
(TU) Le canzoni: non sentirle! The songs: don’t listen to them!
The Indirect Imperative
L’Imperativo indiretto
The Indirect Imperative forms (or Formal Imperative) are the same as those of the Subjunctive Present. These forms are usually used in formal communication, according to the common usage of Lei, the third singular person. The third-person singular “Lei” is different from the Present in the Imperative form, adding an “-I” for -ARE verbs and an “A” for both – ERE and -IRE verbs:

The Negative Indirect Imperative with pronouns
L’Imperativo negativo indiretto con i pronomi
For the third person singular, the pronoun comes always before the verb and so to form the Negative Imperative we just need to add the negation “NON” at the beginning:
